On Monday November 1, 2011, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed Assembly Bill 8512, which will require insurance companies to cover applied behavior analysis (ABA) treatment for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). This makes New York the 29th state to mandate such insurance coverage.
The law, which will take effect November 1, 2012, requires among the most comprehensive ASD insurance coverage in the nation. Private health insurance companies will be required to cover ASD screening, diagnosis and treatment, including ABA. Furthermore, ABA treatment will be covered up to $45,000 a year with no age restrictions.
This law is a dream come true for families of children with ASD, many of whom have been paying out-of-pocket for their child’s treatment.
