Bay Area Walk Now For Autism Speaks

The San Jose office for the Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD, Inc.) was proud to participate again this year in the Bay Area Walk Now event sponsored by Autism Speaks, a non-profit organization supporting families affected with Autism. This marked the 11th year that this walk has taken place in the city of San Jose, CA.

It was an amazing scene to be a part of on May 18, 2013 as over 6,000 people showed up to walk and support those individuals and families affected by autism. There were teams of families and friends wearing shirts showing support for their loved ones and helping to raise money for the growing autism community. It was a heartfelt event, especially in light of the recent tragedy; the death of Bay Area 9-year-old, Mikaela Lynch. She was a young girl on the spectrum that lost her life earlier in the month after eloping from her family’s vacation home. Several donations at this Autism Speaks event were made in her honor. It was amazing to learn that this event raised a total of $306, 938!

CARD San Jose was one of over 36 resource/service provider vendors that had an informational table display to offer assistance to the participants as well as general information and guidance regarding autism, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and CARD services. We were pleased to offer a variety of informational brochures about the many services that CARD offers including ABA services in the home, clinic and school settings, eLearning; an online training tool for parents and professionals, SKILLS; and online curriculum and assessment tool exclusively offered and created by CARD as well as some additional, specific areas of focus embodied in our service model.

We also added some flare to our CARD table by offering a craft making opportunity to the children at the event as well as sidewalk chalk and a giant bubble-making station. The bubbles were a big hit and one little girl even came up to tell us that our booth was her favorite one!! As the Autism community continues to grow and become stronger, CARD San Jose continues to be pleased and proud to be a part of this wonderful event. We look forward to participating again next year!
