CARD To Host Free Insurance Workshop For Parents, May 19 In San Juan Capistrano

The Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD) will host an Autism Insurance Funding Workshop on Saturday May 19, 2012 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for parents and caregivers to learn the changes that will take effect on July 1, 2012 due to SB 946. The informational seminar will be held at the CARD San Juan Capistrano office, located at 27127 Calle Arroyo, Suite 1921, San Juan Capistrano, California. Light refreshments will be served.

The A-Word, Autism Part 27: Providing Solutions For Noncompliance And Biting

In this week’s episode, we learn that outings have become an issue for Cheryl and Mike as Jack Riley has been attempting to bite his therapists and his mother out of aggression. Jessica takes Jack Riley on a walk outside with the family to determine the antecedent (what happens before the behavior of biting) , and the consequence (what happens after the behavior). Once this is determined, it will allow her to modify Jack Riley’s behavior.

CARD’s 2nd Annual Toys For Tots Campaign

To start off the holiday season properly, the CARD San Juan Capistrano office hosted its annual Thanksgiving potluck with a special guest of honor, Sgt. Garrett Decker of the United States Marines. We filled ourselves with tasty treats and enjoyed each other’s company as we bonded over the many joys of working with a client base that is so special to all our hearts. Before we bid farewell, we gathered around, marine by our side, to take one of many pictures depicting our 2011 Toys for Tots journey.

Families with children from birth to five years of age who are experiencing any sort of challenging behavior and reside in the communities of the Northeast Maricopa region may qualify for a “First Things First” grant that provides free specialized outpatient services.

New Toy for Teaching Kids with Autism

The benefit of using toys and robots to help teach social skills is that the toy can be programmed to respond consistently. Consistent responses help children to learn the correct behaviors more quickly. The soft, tactile nature of Auti could be appealing to some children with autism and encourage them to interact with Auti. Another good point about Auti is that it responds to touch as well as speech, so children without speech could still interact with Auti and potentially learn.

CARD’s New School In Virginia Will Address The Critical Need Of Children with Autism

The American Psychiatric Association’s Proposed Revision of the Diagnostic Criteria for Autism

While these are very real concerns, they do not take away from the scientific evidence that the disorder is best described as falling along a spectrum and that the APA’s revised diagnostic criteria likely offers a more accurate clinical definition of the disorder. As we move forward with the revised diagnostic criteria, we will surely run into obstacles; however, in the long run I believe we will have a much more clinically useful definition of autism. I am interested in hearing what you have to say on the matter. What are your thoughts on the APA’s revised diagnostic criteria?
